Native Woods Naturist Park—July 2009Native Woods Naturist Park As I considered my list for my first camping trip since I was twelve (generator, medical staff [including ambulance], chef, massage therapist, all of the worldwide web’s available camping inventory), I found myself looking forward to it not only because it was going to be a new nude experience, but it truly had been the age of twelve since I was camping. In all actuality, I managed to actually take with me: my half-dead flashlight, my trusty pocket-knife, and beer. Native Woods Naturist Park (NWNP) is tucked away about forty miles south of Savannah, GA, just ten miles off I-95. Easy to find—but far enough away from the hustle-bustle of everyday life, making it a nice getaway for a weekend or a season (as Bennie and Karol Williams, the owners put it; more on them later). Since NWNP is located halfway between Jacksonville, FL and Savannah, GA, it’s right in the middle of American history and fun, with lots to do: see what Sherman did (who was a nudist, by the way) burned the town four times; has the smallest church in America; seafood restaurants abound; R.J. Reynolds’ old home place (yes, the tobacco giant); and just a short drive to the Islands Georgia’s most well known for: Tybee, Cumberland, St. Simons and Jekyll—always something to do and places to visit in Darien. As campgrounds go, NWNP has all the amenities of home: electricity, cable, Wi-Fi, internet, hot/cold running water (check website to see which apply for what campsite) and even a homemade rustic cabin for those not into the tent or RV scene. One can’t get enough of the newly installed above-ground pool, with the spacious new deck for taking full advantage of those sunny-filled days in McIntosh County (right on the coast, where nude and gambling cruises and local fishing trips can be secured with a phone call [call first to check schedules]). Cell usage is spotty at NWNP, but then that’s the definition of vacation, isn’t it?……out-of-touch, not available, unreachable? This park has been where it is since 1975…with Bennie at the helm since then and Karol coming into the picture several years ago. Bennie, retired military, and Karol, who works part-time at the Darien Visitors Center, give 100% of their spare time, energy, and money to NWNP (actually “camping out” in the cabin for eleven weeks while their house was being built). Nudists at heart but regular folks too, they attend the local Chamber of Commerce meetings, meet their grandkids for lunch and help a local teen collect recyclables (all with their clothes on, by the way). Karol made sure July 4th was fun (and filling) for everyone with Brauts and dogs grilling in time for our picnic by the pool (and her homemade slaw), and cool drinks were aplenty as the southern sun had its way with the attendees (out with a vengeance, intending to leave no one looking pale) . Hospitable and gracious, Bennie and Karol made sure this camper had all that was needed to have a comfortable, relaxing, enjoyable time at NWNP. If you check their website, you’ll notice that their next nude cruise is scheduled to set sail for four hours on July 18th. Call or email for more information.
