December 2, 2008—Lee BaxandallNews from the President—Lee Baxandall
Lee exemplified naturist activism for over 3 decades. His production of numerous publications, including the World Guide to Nude Beaches and “N” Magazine (originally Clothed with the Sun), introduced many of us to the joys of nude recreation. My first visit to a quarry swimming hole in Virginia was the result of a friend’s researches in the World Guide. Lee never hesitated to take on a legal challenge. His passion for body acceptance and nudist freedom were utterly devoted to the advancement of nudist rights in America. I had the privilege of discussing nudist challenges with Lee on several occasions. We met at a gathering on Assateague (Virginia side) in the mid 1980’s, when it was still possible to be nude there and when the National Capital Naturists was holding regular beach clean-ups, building dune fences for the National Park Service and funding the installation of portable toilets. We discussed the future of free beaches at the Naturist Gathering at Avalon in 1996. At the dedication of the Lee Baxandall Memorial Bridge at Desert Sun Resort in Palm Springs (then Desert Shadows), I was pleased to represent AANR in honoring Lee’s many contributions to nude recreation. Lee was in a particularly severe stage of Parkinson’s Disease at the time and was unable to attend the ceremony, but graciously made time for me later in the week to talk briefly about our visions for the future of nude recreation. Lee Baxandall demonstrated the courage of his convictions and his passion for naturism with every breath of his life. That passion will continue to light the way for many as we move forward to conquer future challenges. Susan A. Weaver
