The weather in eastern North Carolina is usually pretty nice around the last week in October. This October, while we were at Coventry Club & Resort in Tabor City, nature delivered five days of sunny nudist delight. Though the days were just right, it is true that we all bundled up for the Haunted Hay Ride - but it was after dark and there was just the right amount of nip in the air.
Prior to the Halloween costume contest
and dance, a few of the members, along with the managers, David and Tracy, cooked
and served a ghoulash feast for all . We did our part. We painted on our costumes and we danced.
But we were only two of the many members and guests who celebrated the country’s
third largest party night (after New Year’s and Super Bowl Sunday) at one of
our very fine AANR-East nudist clubs.
We have been told that Susan, one of the owners of the club, is a descendent of Lady Godiva of Coventry, England. We didn’t spot any horses, so someone could have been pulling my leg, but the club’s logo, created by Bill, the other owner, is evidence that it could be true. Susan and Bill also own Coventry Club & Resort in Vermont.
Coventry is simply one of the easiest RV campgrounds to get in and out of. The day after we arrived - before Mother Nature brought us the five glorious days of warm sun - we got to spend a full day in our rig in a cold, continuous rain. There were no downpours, but it rained for a long time. Other sites would have reverted to mud, or at least mush, in similar conditions. The Coventry RV area remained firm. I presume that's because the sandy soil drains quickly.
There were no tenters while we were there, so I don’t know where those shelters usually pop up. It was late October after all. My guess is that some appear in the RV area and others nestle back in the woods. Not that long ago the park was a farm. As a result, the trees that are most mature surround it. Over its years as a nudist haven, a variety of new trees have been planted and are now turning into adolescents and young adults. It appears that tenters looking for a nice, level, open spot with lots of sky can easily find that and those who want to retreat to a more sheltered place can nestle into clearings in the pine woods.
We have a dual purpose when we visit AANR-East parks. First we are there to enjoy the amenities and friendships the park has to offer. Coventry was great in that regard. While even in the South it was too late in the year to linger in the solar-heated pool, the large round hot tub was magnificent. That’s where lots of nudists clustered, moving in and out of the tub and sharing their thoughts - and pizza.
Our other reason for making a grand tour of the Eastern Region is to bring an AANR presence to each club. We want the members, owners, and management to know that there are advantages of belonging to a group of people who enjoy living a nude life. There is strength and credibility in numbers. At Coventry we were blessed with Susan and Bill, the owners, who gave up a big chunk of a day to share their experiences and discuss all the ways they could draw on the AANR and AANR-East resources intended to support, foster, and grow a nudist resort. What an enjoyable couple! They readily admit that their transition from nudists to nudist park owners has changed their lives. Now they find that whether in one of their parks or when visiting another, their eyes are drawn to what needs to be done to make the park a better place. They are working with the local government officials to be sure that their facility grows in harmony with the surrounding community.
We left Coventry as Mother Nature announced that it was really fall, not Indian summer, and rather cool and unsettled weather was getting its turn. We left Coventry knowing it was in good hands and would welcome us back the next time we passed by.
